Homework Expectations in Merlin Class

Maths

Y2:

10 mins 5 x per week on Numbots. In the Summer term Y2 pupils will move onto TTRockstars!

Y3:

5 mins 5x per week = TTRS (Garage or Arena mode)
5 mins 5x per week = TTRS soundcheck mode (in preparation for the Multiplication Check in Y4)

Y2&3: Weekly arithmetic questions will be sent home to consolidate previous learning. Answers will be provided to self-mark at home. Misconceptions will be targeted by the class teacher in class during arithmetic sessions.

Reading

Y2: Children share their 'Learning to Read' book with an adult in school 3 x a week; this book will then go home with them on a Friday to continue practising and sharing at home.

Y3: Children will have an appropriate reading for pleasure book available to them which can be changed when required. This will be guided by the class teacher; children will read with an adult in school at least 3x a week.

Please record any reading you do with your child in their yellow reading record. Year 2 pupils should also be encouraged to read for pleasure every day at home. This might be sharing a book together at bedtime, a parent reading a book, children looking at a book independently, children reading to an adult, or even their pets or teddies!

Reading for Pleasure books refer to books and other reading material from the school or class libraries. We actively encourage children to read books from their home libraries, but request that these stay at home - children are encouraged to share recommendations in our Book Talk sessions and we will build our libraries with the reading material they suggest.

Spelling

Spelling books will be sent home each Friday with a new set of spellings that relate to the spelling lessons through the week; children are encouraged to explore the words, think about what they sound like and look like. Children may want to make the words; for example, using sand or playdough! A great extra challenge could be exploring the etymology of the words and where they come from! Books to be returned to school each Thursday, so that they can be sent home the following day with new words to explore at home.

Spelling homework focuses on deliberate practice and oracy skills. Children practise spelling at school using lots of strategies. A bank of strategies will be provided in spelling practice books to support ways to explore at home. It is important to check and correct for any errors when children are recording their work in their spelling books - please support your child to do this. Class teachers will also double check when checking and any errors will be highlighted and re-visited. Corrections can be made on the sheet or any adjacent page.
